Prevention begins at school

Back Care Awareness Week: 5th-11th October 2015

BackCare aims to significantly reduce the burden of back pain by providing information and advice to all people and organisations affected by back pain.  They fund scientific research into the causes, prevention and management of back pain.

Back pain is a major health issue costing the country and the health service billions of pounds every year.  Sickness absence currently costs the UK economy £15bn, musculoskeletal disorders are one of the leading causes of sickness absence.

This years focus is on Back Care in Schools.

Some school statistics:

  • One quarter of UK secondary school pupils suffer from regular or daily back pain
  • School bag burden was associated with a ten-fold higher rate of back pain
  • Back pain was also linked to prolonged sitting.
